One thing I would recommend while visiting Tanzania is spending one day in a traditional Massai tribe. There are many tour operators that can bring you to a Massai tribe but I wouldn’t recommend this option because there will be a lots of tourists and the Massai atmosphere will be a bit fake. As they see tourists every day and know exactly how to treat them and get their money, it is not the best idea.
The best way to make a real Massai experience is by getting in touch with a real Massai. I had the chance to get to know a Massai in my hotel who was a friend of the owner. For one day he took me on the back of his motorbike for a one hour ride to his Massai family. Far away from civilisation, in the middle of the dry surroundings of Moshi, I had the chance to spend the whole morning and afternoon with the family and even have a traditional meal with them. The communication was non existing as swahili wasn’t my language, but we could understand each other without many words. I had the privilege to walk around the village and visit the houses. Especially the kids were so cute, that it was hard to leave in the evening. This day trip was an experience that I will never forget.
