One of my favorite places in South America is definitely Huacachina in Peru. This lagoon surrounded by sand dunes offers many activities and is a small place where you can relax and escape the stress of your trip. Here are the top things you have to do in Huacachina.
Exploring the lagoon
Huacachina is a small place, but it’s fun to walk around, meet the locals who are sitting on the benches or swimming in the lagoon. You can also climb up the dunes to have nice views of Huacachina.
Sandboarding
Sandboarding is not as easy as it looks like, but it’s a lot of fun. One afternoon we rent sandboards and were trying it on the dunes next to our hostel and the other day we did an organized tour in a dune buggy (so thrilling) which brings you to different dunes on which you can do some sandboarding.
Visiting a Winery
The area around Huacachina is famous because of its numerous wineries. During one afternoon we visited the winery Bodega El Catador and got a guide that told us everything about the wine making process. At the end we also bought 2 bottles of wine that we were drinking later on our trip.
Ballestas Islands
Making a boat trip to the Ballestas islands is worth it, because you can observe animals that you wouldn’t expect living in Peru, like for example penguines, sea lions and seabirds. The harbour where you get into the boat is in Paracas (one hour by car from Huacachina), but we booked a complete tour with the bus transfer from Huacachina.
