In 2000, I got the chance to make a trip to Syria. I got invited by my aunt, who was living there with her family back then. I stayed in the country for around 10 days and toured it by car with my family. We saw amazing sights and met lots of truly friendly people. I would have never imagined that 15 years later this country would be the scene of such violence and destruction. Beautiful sights like Palmyra, Crac des Chevaliers or Aleppo will never look like they did 15 years ago.
